Abstract

Background: Cancer in children may profoundly affect not only the individuals with cancer, but also their families considerably.  The course of treatment for childhood cancer presents numerous recurrent stressors for children and their family .They face several lingering medical and psychological uncertainties and immediate and long-term adverse medical complications. Therefore measurement of their caregivers’ quality of life during active treatment is preferable and more appropriate. Quality of life has been defined in a variety of ways depending on the context and the orientation of scholars. The WHOQOL GROUP defined quality of life as individual’s perception of their position in life in the context of the culture and value system in which they live and in relation to their goals, expectations, standards and concerns. The purpose of the this study was to evaluate caregivers quality of life and also to investigate the correlation between quality of life of caregivers  and their satisfaction of social work section services.

Method: The present study employed a correlational design, with 125 caregivers of Iranian children with cancer. It was conducted at hospitals covered by MAHAK, a non-governmental organization support children suffering from cancer and their families. Quality of life in caregivers was measured by the Iranian version of World Health Organization Questionnaire on Quality of Life. This is a 26-item instrument consisting of four domains: physical health, psychological health, social relationship and environmental health. Satisfaction of social work section services was measured by checklist in six aspects including: satisfaction of problem solving, availability of social workers, percentage of support, services related to children, services related to their family and overall satisfaction of services. Demographic variables were gender of caregivers and educational level of them. The software SPSS 17.0 and also student t test, ANOVA and Spearmans correlation were used for statistical analysis.

Results: The caregivers were 67.2%female and 32.8%male. The scores in the physical health and psychological status and environmental condition in caregivers of children with cancer significantly were lower than the general population. Females’ caregivers had lower scores in physical health, psychological status and social relationship domains than males but no statistically significant differences were observed within them and also significant differences between education levels in caregivers’ quality of life were not found. The highest satisfaction was on percentage of support and also caregivers had the lowest satisfaction about services for families. The results showed that in all aspects caregivers’ satisfaction was higher than 50% (except services for family). There was a positive correlation between satisfaction on services related to children and psychological health of caregivers quality of life.

Conclusion: Understanding of factors that associate with caregivers’ quality of life is of central importance to the development care, treatment process and effective interventions of children with cancer. These findings provide useful information for managers to enhance quality of services and to be aware of each of the service quality dimensions in satisfaction formation of caregivers.
